Natural Reserve
The Zingaro Nature Reserve, established in 1981, was the first natural reserve in Sicily. It is an unspoiled paradise, featuring coastal trails that lead to breathtaking coves and old farmhouses, now transformed into museums celebrating Sicilian arts. But what’s the love story behind this reserve? In 1976, during a period of rampant construction in Sicily, plans were underway to build a road connecting San Vito to Scopello, threatening to destroy this pristine coastline. That’s when the locals stepped in. In 1980, they organized a peaceful march, putting an end to the construction plans. Their efforts led to the suspension of the project and the creation of the reserve we cherish today.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The reserve is located about a 20-minute drive from San Vito’s center. If you don’t have your own car, local tour agencies offer convenient shuttle services. As for boat trips, they’re all of good quality, with fairly standardized services. The key decision is choosing the size of the boat and how many people you want to share your excursion with. Information desks to plan your visit are scattered throughout the town center.
